Choosing a suitable funeral directer isn't easy. During the very difficult period after a loved one has passed away, many families find themselves struggling to cope.
For over 25 years Palmer Funeral Services in Christchurch has been helping the community bid farewell to their loved ones in peace and dignity. Our dedicated team will help you in every aspect of designing a fitting funeral service for your dearly departed.

The role of a funeral director

At Palmer Funeral Services, a funeral director will assist you firstly by meeting with immediate family or friends to make arrangements for the care of the deceased and for the funeral or farewell ceremony. Our directors adhere strictly to your wishes regarding these details
Our team will help you organise all practical matters, such as by arranging the ceremony and organising service sheets, music or flowers. We can offer assistance with transporting the deceased anywhere in New Zealand or overseas and provide embalming if requested. Your loved one will always be attended to with the utmost respect and care.
Palmer Funeral Services will also:
  • Organise a cremation or burial as requested
  • Organise a notice about the death and/or funeral in the newspaper if needed
  • Advise and arrange for cultural needs to be met
  • Arrange viewings of the person for family/whanau and friends
  • Make sure the death has been registered with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (a legal requirement) and that the death certificate will be forwarded to the immediate family
  • Make sure legal and coronial requirements are met
  • Help the immediate family apply for ACC assistance or a Work and Income funeral grant if relevant
You may also wish to ask your funeral director about the ways technology could be used to allow people who cannot be present to be able to view the proceedings, or to send contributions to be used in the service (for example, a special message to be read or a video clip to be shown).

Our services

Everything we do at Palmer Funeral Services is designed to help make a difficult time easier. The period following a loved one's passing is often confusing, frightening and fraught with emotion. It helps to have a professional who will arrange the details while remaining compassionate and caring.
Palmer Funeral Services offers a full range of traditional funeral services but will also tailor services to meet your unique requirements, including catering at our venue or off-site as required.

Pre-Paid Funeral Plans

Planning in advance can reduce the amount of stress that accompanies a funeral. Speak to Palmer Funeral Services to arrange pre-payment for funerals. Pre-arranging and paying for a funeral gives you peace of mind and will remove a large part of the financial and emotional burden from your family members. The FDANZ Family Bereavement Plan protects your family from the responsibility of making difficult decisions in very emotional circumstances and ensures that your wishes are known and arranged long before they are needed.
Palmer Funeral Services offers many options and our team is always happy to discuss how we can accommodate your wishes. Our directors can deal with all aspects of a burial or cremation, including the type of memorial. We always try and have two directors at the funeral: one to make sure the event is orchestrated smoothly and another to attend to the family's needs.
You can depend on Palmer Funeral Services to take care of all the details, including:
  • Arranging viewings either at your premises or at ours
  • Cemetery or crematorium arrangements
  • Arrange the location for the funeral service
  • Prepare service sheets and floral tributes
  • Work and Income (WINZ) advice
  • Placement of death notices
  • Casket selection
  • Arrange a celebrant or minister
  • Arrange catering services
  • Repatriation

Grief support

Dealing with grief is never easy. At Palmer Funeral Services we understand how hard it can be to cope with the loss of a loved one.

That's why we offer advice on the many resources available to help family and friends with the grieving process. We are proud to be able to help families and to be able to create cherished memories of a personal and dignified farewell.

Funeral account

The immediate family or the person making the arrangements generally covers all the funeral expenses, if the deceased has not pre-paid their funeral. Such costs may be then later covered by the estate.

Our account is issued generally 2 weeks after the funeral has been completed and is due for payment within six weeks of the date of death.

You may be entitled to grants, depending on the circumstances of the death, your income and relationship to the deceased.

ACC payments

If your family member has died in an accident, you may be entitled to claim financial assistance from ACC, such as:
  • A grant to help with funeral costs
  • A one-off survivor's grant for the spouse and children
  • Ongoing childcare payments
  • Weekly income compensation
The cause of death must be known before ACC can pay any compensation. If there is no inquest after the cause of death is established, ACC payments can be made immediately.
Contact ACC on 0800 222 075 or see www.acc.co.nz for more information.

Work and Income NZ grants

You could be eligible for a Work and Income (WINZ) funeral grant if you are either:
  • The partner, spouse, child, parent or guardian of the deceased person
  • Arranging the funeral of someone with no partner, spouse or child
The amount granted depends on the money and assets the deceased person had. If you are their partner or parent, your own income and assets are also taken into account.
Contact Work and Income on 0800 559 009 (7am – 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am – 1pm Saturday) or see www.workandincome.govt.nz for more information.
Please note that you cannot claim a funeral grant from both WINZ and ACC.

Ex-Service persons

In addition to the above grants, anyone who served in the New Zealand Armed Forces prior to December 1947 could be eligible to a free or subsidised cemetery plot in the Services Lawn Cemetery. This may also apply to those who served in Korea, J. Force, Malaya or United Nation Peace Keeping Forces.

The Veteran's Pension gives entitlement to a lump sum payment on the death of the veteran and a lesser amount on the death of the partner.

A Surviving Spouses Pension is available to the partners of veterans who have died while on specified service, or if they were in receipt of a War Disablement Pension (of at least 70%) at the time of death, or their death is attributable to their service.

Contact Veteran's Affairs NZ on 0800 483 8372 (0800 4 VETERAN) or see www.veteransaffairs.mil.nz for more information.

Victim Support grants

Victim Support can provide help and guidance after a traumatic and/or sudden death. In some cases, discretionary grants may be made to families of homicide victims who are experiencing financial hardship.
